I was walking the dog early on this cold morning.  The sun hadn’t shown its face yet and snow was continuing to pile up from the late night storm.  A man was bundled and hunched shoveling his driveway. As I passed he turned over his shoulder and said, “Welcome to Michigan.” Surprised that he knew I was new in town, I smiled wide and said, “Thanks!”  It wasn’t...

Winter Wonderland
After spending so much time in a seasonal community like Nantucket you’d think I might be used to the small town where we have settled for part of the winter.  The village of Three Oaks, Michigan makes downtown Nantucket look like Rockefeller center this time of year.  According to one woman the whole population is in hibernation, but I have my doubts that the tiny clapboard cottages are inhabited...

weather report
Shall we talk about the weather?  My favorite features on my iphone are the current weather and time calibrations in all cities and zones.  I’ve become weather obsessed this winter - it has so far been one of the nastiest I can remember.  I am rounding out a looooong weekend in Chicago where it is 19 degrees.  It is sunny and beautiful and feels downright balmy compared to the -30 it was...

Are we there yet?
After several setbacks and many long winter weeks on Nantucket we finally arrived in Boston at my sister in-law’s place in the tony section of Back Bay.  We had planned a relaxing weekend with no obligations save one little appointment to check in on our apartment just up the street in Beacon Hill.   Our tenants are sweet and keep the place meticulous so we were happy to attend to a couple of...

Aaaaaannnnnd, we're off
The morning started out tense at the Steamship Authority.  Most of the women have been employed there since 1981 and the cranky old hags really had it out for me. The exchange went something like this: MEAN TICKET LADY: This ticket is for today at noon, you’ll have to come back. ME: Well, that’s impossible I was supposed to leave yesterday at noon, which is when I originally received this ticket,...

I'm not complaining. I'm just expressing myself.
I’m in a weird place right now and that place is Nantucket (I am not talking about the whale-embroidered pants either).  It was 9 degrees today with wind gusting at around 60 mph. It’s the first day of the year and despite the angry wind the island is quiet.  Restaurants are closed and most people are shuttered in their homes. We are staying in a cottage on the west side of the island facing the...
